Design And Display

OnePlus has used a different design on its latest Nord, to differentiate it from the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Some aspects of the OnePlus Nord’s design are similar to the Oppo and Realme, and I’m not surprised, because they are all part of the same family. It has a new feature which is the alert slider, a similar layout for the buttons and ports, and yes, no headphone jack again.

The build quality is excellent with a polycarbonate body of the One Plus Nord. You will get the protection of Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back of the device. I like the Blue Marble color on the Nord. You will also get subdued Grey Onyx color.

You can’t expand the internal storage as the SIM tray only supports two nano-SIM cards. This is not a cause of worry for the 128GB and 256GB variants, but If you are using a 64GB variant you might fall short of storage after a year or so, depending on usage. There is a surprise from OnePlus as it offers 50GB of free cloud storage for a year if you sign up for its Red Cable Club.

DISPLAY

OnePlus smartphones are known for their AMOLED displays and I’m happy to see that this also comes with the same display. The sides of the display aren’t curved like OnePlus 8, but there is a cutout for two selfie cameras. The size of the screen is 6.44 inches and has a Full-HD+ resolution of 1080×2400 along with a 90Hz refresh rate. If you want to tweak the colors you will get the option and you can also mask the camera hole with a black strip, if needed. It’s your choice.

OnePlus Nord’s display doesn’t have any color accuracy certifications, but it supports HDR10+. Overall it’s a good-looking panel, with deep blacks and punchy colors.

Talking about the box accessories you will get normal things like any other One Plus phone. There’s a silicone bumper case, a Type-C cable, a fast charger, and of course, stickers to show off.

One Plus Nord Specifications

Nord is one of the very few phones to launch in India with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC. This chip was announced last year along with the flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC. This processor has an integrated Qualcomm X52 5G modem and has inbuilt on the 7nm process. The processor promises that it has better processing capabilities and up to 30 percent faster graphics rendering than to the Snapdragon 730G.

Variants

You will get three variants of One Plus Nord in India. The first variant with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for Rs. 24,999; the second one with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage which is priced at Rs. 27,999, and the top model is 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage will cost you Rs. 29,999.

The phone measures 8.2mm in thickness and weigh 184g. A single super-linear speaker at placed at the bottom, and an in-display fingerprint sensor, and face unlock authentication. It doesn’t have any official IP certification. The device comes with a 4,115mAh battery, with30T fast charging.

The OnePlus experience wouldn’t be complete without OxygenOS. Like the One Plus flagship phones Nord also has a very similar interface and features. There’s Zen mode, a built-in screen recorder, and you will get an option to customize the ambient display, fingerprint animations, etc. One Plus had promised to give software updates for two years and security updates for three years.

You will see some software changes in the OnePlus Nord, compared to other OnePlus phones. The biggest one is the use of Google’s stock dialler and messages apps instead of using its own OxygenOS. OnePlus wasn’t very clear on the exact reason for the change when asked about it but simply stated that the buyer would be more comfortable with Google’s solution.

Another small change has been made in the camera app. If you want to share your photo then simply you have to long-press to preview and choose the app to share with.

nord

PERFORMANCE

According to OnePlus, the Nord is also going to deliver the same experience as its flagship phones, and yes, it does a very good job. With regular usage,
you can’t find any difference between the OnePlus Nord and an OnePlus 8. The interface is very snappy, apps load very faster, jumping between two apps is a breeze.

The Snapdragon 765G is a pretty solid processor.
The OnePlus Nord did a great job such as Asphalt 9: Legends and PUBG Mobile, using the highest visual settings in each title. The gameplay was smooth and you didn’t notice any unusual heating either. Face recognition is very fast.

The in-display fingerprint sensor worked very well. You just have to quickly tap to unlock the phone

Videos looked good on the OnePlus Nord’s display, especially HDR videos. The single speaker on the Nord is very loud, thanks to Dirac’s software enhancements.

Talking about battery life it was pretty solid throughout. On one charge you can easily go through one and a half-day. If you are playing lots of games and using the camera heavily then the battery will drain quicker, but I was still able to get a full day’s worth of use. In the video loop test, the Nord ran for about 14.5 hours, which is a good time.

According to me on average, I think most people would be happy with the mileage they get out of a single charge. When you are running low, the bundled charger is able to take the battery to around 93 percent in an hour, which is fairly quick.

nord

FINAL WORDS

With the launch of OnePlus Nord, it feels like OnePlus is going back to its roots. This is not a ‘flagship killer’ smartphone.
You can call OnePlus Nord as the OnePlus Lite or OnePlus 8 Lite. I think it is just a beginning by OnePlus, and hope so in the future, we could see more in this series, possibly targeting even lower tiers of the smartphone market. If you are currently using an older OnePlus smartphone, then the Nord should be a good upgrade for you.

I don’t think many people are going to see about the 800-series Qualcomm SoC, because, it’s really impossible to tell the difference. The shift from focusing purely on specifications in its products in the early days of the company, to the focus on the experience now, can be seen not only in the OnePlus Nord but also in its other products.

The OnePlus Nord is currently the most affordable 5G smartphone in the Indian market, which is a unique advantage for OnePlus. The competition is good, though. Smartphones such as the Redmi K20 Pro and the Realme X3 series offer a more powerful processor. The OnePlus Nord might not always match up to the competition on specifications alone, but when you take into account the software and promise of timely updates, it does make a very compelling case for itself.

I hope you liked the post and if you have any query feel free to comment below.

POCO X2 DESIGN

While the previous models of POCO are plain-looking and made of simple plastic in order to remain affordable, but Poco is trying a different approach here with its new model. POCO has a bright, colorful glass rear with a gradient tone and an unusual circular design around the camera strap. The logo of the POCO is at the bottom.

The main design of the phone is the circular patch. At first sight, we thought that Poco X2 has a raised camera module, but it’s just a patch with a smooth finish while the glass around it looks frosted. Poco X2 has this patch which reflection of a convex mirror, and we were able to frame a selfie taken with the rear camera.

With a 6.67-inch screen, this is a large phone in size. It’s still difficult to use the phone with one hand Your attention will be drawn to the wide dual-camera cutout in the upper right corner of the screen – it isn’t too noticeable in ordinary use, but definitely is a distraction when watching a full-screen video.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

The power button on the right side acts as a fingerprint sensor, but in the long run, it’s not a good deal. The fingerprint registration process took a little bit longer than usual Left-handed users will find this placement awkward, and you’ll need to enroll at least two or three fingers so you can unlock the phone when it’s in your hand and on a table.

The volume buttons are above the power button. There’s an infrared emitter on the top, like all other Xiaomi phones. There’s a 3.5mm audio socket, USB Type-C port, and speaker on the bottom of the phone.

Poco says that it has used Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for the front as well as the rear of the protection of X2. You get a clear transparent case for the protection of this phone.

Overall, it seems as POCO wants to establish itself as a brand. This phone is unique and recognizable from the front as well as the back.

poco x2

POCO X2 SOFTWARE AND SPECIFICATIONS

POCO X2 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, which is the best thing in this price range. This is the same chip that Realme X2 comes with, so we can assume that gaming and general-purpose performance will be solid.

Poco X2 with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage is priced at Rs. 15,999; 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage priced at Rs. 16,999; or 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage priced at Rs. 19,999.

The 6.67-inch 2340×1080-pixel display has a killer feature. This is a subtle feature but it really does improve the quality of the user experience, making the Android UI feel smooth and responsive. The company calls this feature “RealityFlow” and it isn’t hard to see why. For gaming purposes, this phone won’t make you sad.

Poco has a 4500mAh battery, dual VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, FM radio, and all the standard sensors.

USER INTERFACE

Poco’s UI is identified as Poco Launcher as well as MIUI 11.0.3 in different parts of the UI. It looks and feels like what we’ve seen recently on the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro. It’s based on the latest Android 10.

Among the preinstalled apps on Poco X2, you’ll find Mi Pay and Mi Credit, Xiaomi’s apps for UPI transactions and personal loans respectively. There’s are several Mi apps including a Web browser, photo gallery, and calendar, but some others such as Mi Remote, Themes, and Screen Recorder are useful. The third-party apps, including Helo, Gaana, Amazon Shopping, Dailyhunt, Opera, and more, are removable apps.

You can customize the UI interface. Smart touches include a search bar at the bottom of the drawer so you don’t have to stretch and neatly grouped “Special features” in the Settings app. These features include the Game Turbo optimization mode, Quick Reply panels for messaging apps, and Second Space for privacy.

poco x2

CAMERA

The Poco X2 comes with four rear cameras and two front cameras. The primary camera consists of the 64-megapixel with an f/1.89 aperture and uses the Sony IMX686 sensor. There’s also an 8-megapixel with f/2.2 ultra-wide camera, used for taking ultra-wide shots with a 2-megapixel macro camera with a 2cm-10cm focal range as well as autofocus, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The primary selfie camera consists of a 20-megapixel resolution and is accompanied by a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

poco x2

FINAL WORDS

The Chinese company constantly comes up with new models that raise the market in terms of value, whether the focus is on style, battery life, cameras, specifications, or attention-grabbing features. If you’re looking for the best smartphone under 20k and if you’re okay with MIUI then yes POCO X2 is worth buying and definitely made for you. Poco X2 has everything which 16k phone needs, so overall, if want to buy this device then go for it, you won’t get any problem.

poco x2

I will be glad to know if you have any questions regarding this phone or about anything in the comment box below.

I hope my POCO X2 Review is helpful for you.

SAMSUNG M31 DESIGN

At first glance, it is hard to distinguish between the previous model Samsung Galaxy M30s and Samsung Galaxy M31 from the front. Both smartphones come with 6.4-inch displays with waterdrop notches, which you call Infinity U displays, The bezels aren’t thin but are acceptable for this price range. Just like with other M series smartphones, Samsung has used plastic material in the construction of the M31. The earpiece is sleek and sits above the display in the frame of the smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy M31 feels very comfortable to hold in the hand. The sides of the phones are slightly curved which helps in the grip. Samsung has crafted the power and volume buttons on the right of the device. The power button is easy to reach but the volume buttons could have been placed better.

samsung m31

On the left side is the SIM tray which did not sit perfectly flush on our review unit. The Galaxy M31 has a 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and speaker at the bottom of the device. On the top, there is only a secondary microphone.

Looking at the backside of the Galaxy M31, you’ll see some changes. The camera module is similar to the previous model of the Galaxy M30s but it now adds a fourth camera. The fingerprint scanner was comfortable for us to reach while holding the device.

Samsung M31 comes with a big 6,000mAh battery and weighs 191g makes the device feel a little heavy. Samsung offers you a 15W charger in the box which should help keep charging times down. The company offers Samsung Galaxy M31 in two colours, Ocean Blue and Space Black. The fingerprint scanner is very fast. There is no case in the box, so you have to buy one.

samsung m31

SAMSUNG M31 FEATURES

The specification sheet of the Galaxy M31 looks very similar to that of the Galaxy M30s. It comes with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a Full-HD+ resolution. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is used for the protection of this device. The display has good viewing angles. There is two colour to choose from, and you can also change the white balance.

Samsung has retained the Exynos 9611 SoC from Samsung Galaxy M30s. It comes with an octa-core processor with four performance ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and four efficiency Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. For graphics, it has the Mali-G72 GPU. You get 6GB of RAM and a choice between a 64GB storage variant and a 128GB storage variant for Rs. 15,999 or Rs. 16,999 respectively.

OTHER FEATURES

It has two Nano-SIM slots that support 4G as well as VOLTE.
Talking about the software, Samsung ships the new Galaxy M31 with OneUI 2.0 on the latest Android 10. The software is similar to what we have seen on the recently launched Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite. We find a fair amount of bloatware on Galaxy M31. Apart from the Google apps, Netflix, Facebook, and Samsung Max were preinstalled on the M13. Samsung also has its own official apps such as My Galaxy and Samsung Shop. We found My Galaxy to be annoying as it kept pushing notifications throughout the day.

Be careful while setting up the device settings, or Samsung will also send you marketing information. While setting up the phone it suggests that you download several other apps that we suggest you skip.

You can enjoy the Android 10 features such as Dark Mode and Focus Mode, which can be enabled very easily through the notification bar. Dolby Atmos is available. Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls are also present on the Samsung Galaxy M31. Traditional gestures like double-tap to wake, gesture screenshot is present on the Galaxy M31 as well.

samsung m31

PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY LIFE

Samsung has boosted up RAM on the Samsung Galaxy M31 compared to its predecessor which should give it some advantage while multitasking. We did not notice any lag while using the smartphone. The device loads apps quickly, however, it takes some time to load big apps. Since there is plenty of RAM, multitasking is easy and we did not find ourselves waiting for an app to load all over again.

The fingerprint scanner is very quick to unlock the smartphone, and the selfie camera does a good job with face recognition. We enjoyed movies on the AMOLED display.

We played PUBG on the Galaxy M31, and the settings were set to high by default with the graphics set to HD. We played the game at these settings and we did not notice any kind of issue. After playing for 20 minutes the device gets warm and a four percent reduction in the battery. The big battery will allow you to play for quite long without plugging the smartphone into the charger.

With our usage, the battery lasted for close to two days without any issues. If you love battery then, the Galaxy M31 will not disappoint you.

samsung m31

CAMERAS

The Galaxy M31 comes with a quad-camera setup at the back and a single 32-megapixel selfie shooter. The primary camera on the Samsung M31 has a 64-megapixel resolution with f/1.8 aperture. This camera takes 16-megapixel binned shots by default but you can switch to the full resolution also. There is an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The other two cameras are of the 5-megapixel depth sensor and a 5-megapixel macro camera. Samsung’s camera app is the same as before and we could find it very easily.

CONCLUSION OF SAMSUNG M31

Samsung has seen success with the Galaxy M30s. Samsung has upgraded the RAM, added a fourth rear camera, and preloaded Android 10. Samsung Galaxy M31 does not feel like a completely new device, but it’s an upgraded version of Galaxy M30s.

Exynos 9611 is good for this segment but we wouldn’t have complained if this phone had a more powerful processor to fend off the competition. Samsung upgrades this device which makes this phone slightly better and more versatile.

Battery life is the main highlight in M31, and it can last for two days without needing to be plugged in the charger, something the competition at this price level cannot do very easily. The Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Realme X2 will still offer you more bang for your buck overall, but if you don’t care for benchmark scores and just want a device that covers the basics and has a great battery, Samsung Galaxy M31 is made for you.

samsung m31

I hope my Samsung M31 review is helpful for you.

Asus FX504 Review

DESIGN OF ASUS FX 504

Asus FX504 is a pure gaming laptop. It has a black hunk of plastic with faux-aluminum blushing and red paint in an angular, lined pattern. Asus’ own logo is in reflective red. The back has a small cutout, you can also see the status lights even when the laptop is closed.

asus fx504

When you lift the lid you came to know that the inside is pretty much the same. Asus FX504 has a 15.6-inch display surrounded by bezels, and the deck is the same plastic with ugly red lines. The keyboard is backlit, which is also in red.

At 5.1 pounds and 15.1 x 10.3 x 1 inches, the Asus FX504 is thicker than competitors.

The left side of the laptop is loaded with the power jack, Ethernet jack, HDMI output, USB 2.0 port, a pair of USB 3.0 ports and a headphone jack, while the right side of the laptop has only a Kensington lock slot.

asus fx504

DISPLAY OF ASUS FX 504

Asus definitely cut corners with the 15.6-inch, 1080p display on the Asus FX504. It’s dim, bland and lifeless. I watched a 1080p trailer and the experience was good.

On the bright side, the screen of the laptop was sharp, and I could make out every shard of a shattered glass window. When I watched Middle-earth: there was a loss of detail in dark areas.

The panel on this laptop stands only averaged only 220 nits on our light meter, which is dimmer than both the average (256 nits) and the Nitro 5 Spin (296 percent). HP’s Pavilion Power 15t, however, fared even worse, at just 173 nits.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD OF ASUS FX504

The keys on the Asus TUF Gaming FX504 offer 1.4 millimeters of travel and require a good force of 76 grams to actuate. Although it’s our usual preference of 1.5 millimeters, I never felt as if I was bottoming out. The biggest issue was that the keys felt ever-so-slightly bouncy, which took some getting used to. On the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I reached 114 words per minute, which is standard for me, but I had a 3-percent error rate, which is slightly higher than normal for me.

asus fx504

The keyboard has a number pad and is backlit, which is also in red colour. At this price segment, you can’t fault the Asus FX504 for not having a full RGB keyboard.

The 4.1 x 2.8-inch touchpad has a Windows Precision touchpad that responded to gestures like four-finger taps to invoke the Action Center and four-finger swipes to reach the Timeline double fingers to scroll the page. But when I navigated Windows, the plastic felt slippery and quite cheap.

asus fx504

PERFORMANCE OF ASUS FX504

Considering that Asus FX504 is loaded with an Intel Core i5-8300H CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB SSHD, I hoped it would be a little faster. I opened 20 tabs in Google Chrome, including one streaming a 1080p video, there was more lag while switching between tabs. During this, the laptop had a particularly long boot time also.

On the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, Asus FX504 secured a score of 12,038, surpassing the HP Pavilion Power 15t (11,214) but trailing the entry-level gaming average (12,718) and the Acer Nitro 5 Spin (13,477).

FX504 took 54 seconds to transfer 4.97GB of files, for a rate of 94.5 MBps. That’s far slower than the entry-level gaming average (199.3 MBps) and the Nitro 5 Spin (103 MBps) but still quicker than HP Pavilion Power 15t (68.8 MBps).

On the Excel macro test, FX504 took 1 minute and 13 seconds to pair 65,000 names and addresses. That’s a few seconds behind the average (1:10).
But the FX504 excelled in our Handbrake video-editing test. It transcoded 4K video to 1080p video in 11 minutes and 15 seconds, which is much faster than the average (14:20). Both the Nitro 5 Spin (20:12) and the Pavilion Power 15t (20:24) took far longer.

asus fx504

FINAL CONCLUSION OF ASUS FX504

Asus TUF Gaming FX504 is among the cheapest gaming laptops we’ve ever seen. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU with 2GB of VRAM allows you to play games on low or medium settings, which will at least get you playing for now. But the display is dull, and the SSHD storage was slow.

In the market of budget gaming laptops, the Acer Nitro 5 Spin is a better alternative. It gives you a brighter display with longer battery life, and you can get a version with a 7th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU, a 256GB SSD and a more powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

Additionally, Asus has several more versions of the FX series with better specifications.

If you want to spend as little money as possible and still play games, Asus FX504 is worth a look.

I hope my Asus FX504 review is helpful for you.

Dell XPS15 2 in 1

DESIGN OF Dell XPS15 2 in 1

While I thought for a while that the Dell XPS design is getting a little tired, but like the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1’s looks. Surely you are getting the plain silver lid with the Dell logo stamped in black, but it’s so thin and light you will feel the whole thing reinvigorated.

When opened the laptop it shows off the 15.6-inch 4K display with the new “Maglev” keyboard and a soft-touch carbon-fiber deck that feels great.
And if you’re not looking closely, you won’t even notice that the power button has a fingerprint reader built-in the same.

dell xps 15 2 in 1

The Dell XPS is the thinnest 15-inch 2-in-1 we’ve ever seen, at 13.9 x 9.2 x 0.6 inches. In terms of weight, it gives good competition, at 4.4 pounds.
Like it’s previous model Dell’s XPS 13, the XPS 15 2-in-1 is all-in on USB Type-C. On the left side are a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports and a microSD card slot.

dell xps 15 2 in 1

There’s also a helpful battery gauge for checking how much health you have left, and I appreciate that this didn’t get ditched in making the XPS 15 into a convertible.

The right side of the laptop has a pair of USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort, a headphone jack and a Noble lock slot. There are no USB Type-A ports, so you’ll need a dongle to connect to many other accessories.

DISPLAY OF DELL XPS 15 2 IN 1

The 15.6-inch, 4K display on the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 continues a grand tradition of being excellent. The display is bright, colorful and extremely sharp. I watched the 4K movies and I was blown away by the color reproduction.

The panel of the display covers an awesome 160 percent of the sRGB color gamut, including the premium-laptop average of 111 percent, the Lenovo Yoga 720s 114 percent, the Apple MacBook Pro’s 126 percent, and the Microsoft Surface Book 2’s 131 percent.

While the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is plenty luminous, at 387 nits, some competitors are brighter. The Apple MacBook Pro leads the pack, at 460 nits, with the Microsoft Surface Book 2 close behind, at 417 nits. The average is 294 nits, and the Lenovo Yoga 720 measured 272 nits.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

Dell calls it’s keyboard “Maglev,” which means “magnetic levitation.” The short meaning is that it reduces the thickness of the keyboard but uses magnets with a metal plate to create resistance.

The touchpad is quite, less interesting, but it’s dependable. It’s quite spacious, at 4.1 x 3.1 inches, and you all know that it’s a Windows Precision Touchpad, it had no issues responding to Windows 10 gestures like two-finger scrolling and swiping apps down into the taskbar.

PERFORMANCE

Loaded with an Intel Core i7-8705G CPU, with16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is limitless. I opened 30 tabs in Google Chrome, including one streaming a 1080p clip and I don’t feel any kind of lag in performance.

On the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, the XPS 15 earned a score of 15,040, easily surpassing the premium-laptop average (9,820).

The XPS took 13 seconds to copy 4.97GB of files, at a rate of 391.5 MBps. That’s far above average which is 273.86 MBps and easily beats the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (318.1 MBps) and the Lenovo Yoga 720 (267.9 MBps). Apple’s MacBook Pro, however, blazed past everything in its path, with its high speed of 654 MBps.

Dell’s laptop had the fastest HandBrake video editing result we’ve seen. It transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 14 minutes and 10 seconds, beating out the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (23 minutes) and the average (22:05).

BATTERY LIFE

Get ready for the bad news. Dell XPS 15 2-in-1’s battery life is subpar. It last only for 6 hours and 28 minutes, which runs a continuous web browsing, graphics benchmarks, and videos at 150 nits of brightness. The premium laptop category average is 8:48, and the Microsoft Surface Book 2 lasted an astonishing 11:34.

PRICE

Our review unit, Dell XPS 15 with an Intel Core i7-8705G CPU, Radeon graphics, 16GB of RAM, a 4K display and a 1TB SSD runs for 1,83,974.07 Indian Rupees.

The base model costs 1,08,190.41 Indian Rupees and comes with an Intel Core i5-8305G processor with Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1080p display. For 1,58,712.96 Indian Rupees, you can get the same model we reviewed, but with a 256GB SSD.

CONCLUSION OF DELL XPS 15 2 IN 1

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 has a lot of features. Its performance and AMD Radeon graphics are very strong, the 4K display looks amazing and with Maglev, Dell has come up with an incredible solution for making low-travel keyboards.

But still, Dell hasn’t been able to fix the webcam on its XPS line, which is really just an annoyance at this point. And most importantly the battery life is less than 7 hours, which is far below average — and that partially defeats the purpose of Dell making this thing so portable in the first place.

If you need both incredible performance and a thin 2-in-1, Dell XPS 15 is a strong choice. But it won’t be the laptop you travel with unless you lug the charger around. If you need long battery life, consider the Apple MacBook Pro or Microsoft Surface Book 2. The latter’s performance is much larger, but its GTX 1060 also gives you more power.

But if the screen is what you prize most, you won’t get anything else like Dell XPS15 2-in-1, and the performance is excellent for such a thin laptop. But for that, you’ll have to make some compromises with your choice.

DESIGN OF HP SPECTRE x360

Like an artist refining their trade, HP has improved the design (HP Spectre x360) of its laptops with each new product. Now, with the new Spectre x360, the company has crafted a masterpiece.

The Spectre x360’s sleek aluminium chassis is beautifully crafted featuring faceted edges and sharply chamfered corners that look as if they were cut by a master jeweller. These aggressive angles give the Spectre x360 the sort of sophisticated elegance you’d expect from exorbitantly priced accessories sold by a luxury fashion designer.

On the centre of the laptop lid, there is an HP logo in gold chrome; there is a gold-trimmed touchpad next to Spectre branding. Above the keyboard, there is a speaker grill drilled into an attractive triangular pattern. The fingerprint sensor resides on the bottom-right corner of the deck.

The attention to detail is outstanding and even extends to the Spectre accessories: The included faux-leather sleeve has a built-in stylus slot and the laptop’s charging cord is wrapped in nylon.

HP removed the boring silver finish we criticized last year’s model and replaced it with two unique colours: Dark Ash Silver and Poseidon Blue. As a 2-in-1, the Spectre x360 can be rotated into both tablet or tent mode, and although the laptop may look like a jewel, its flexible hinges and rigid lid feel sturdy.

hp spectre x360

But for all of my praise, I can’t ignore the Spectre x360’s chunky top and bottom bezels, especially since nearly all of its competitors now have edge-to-edge displays. Also, instead of improving the volume rocker on last year’s model, HP did away with it altogether. Now you’ll need to tap your way into the volume settings when using the machine in tablet mode, instead of adjusting audio via a physical button, which is a good improvement.

COMPARISON

The HP Spectre x360 is a very portable device, at just 12.2 x 8.6 x 0.6 inches and 2.8 pounds. In comparison, the LG Gram 14 2-in-1 (12.8 x 8.3 x 0.7 inches, 2.5 pounds) is thicker yet lighter than the Spectre x360, while the Lenovo Yoga C930 (12.6 x 8.9 x 0.6 inches, 3.1 pounds) and MateBook 13 (11.3 x 8.3 x 0.6 inches, 2.9 pounds) are heavier but just as thin.

PORTS IN HP SPECTRE X360

The Spectre x360 doesn’t have too many ports, but those it does have are functional and futureproof. On the right side, there is a Thunderbolt 3 charging ports which offer blazing-fast transfer speeds and the ability to connect to multiple 4K monitors or an external GPU.

Headphone/mic jack and microSD card slot is also on the right side of the laptop. On the left side of the laptop, there is a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a welcome addition considering most modern ultrabooks are abandoning it for a slimmer design.

hp spectre x360

A second Thunderbolt 3 charging port hides on the HP Spectre x360’s right chamfered corner. The clever positioning makes it very easy to connect a power cord without having to shift the device around, and the port’s rear-facing angle keeps cords out of the way.

On the other hand, the illuminated power button on the opposite corner is somehow problematic. The button presses into my palm when I hold the Spectre x360 in tablet mode, and quite a bit of pressure is required to actuate it, you can inadvertently induce sleep mode if you’re not careful.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

HP did it again, by fitting a super-comfortable keyboard onto a razor-thin chassis. With 1.4 millimetres of travel, the HP Spectre x360’s chiclet-style keyboard depresses deeper than most of its ultrabook competitors. Yes, a bit short of our 1.5-mm preference, but the keys still feel punchy and provide excellent tactile feedback, perhaps because of their ideal 70 grams of actuation force.

Better yet, the keys are large, well-spaced and offer two backlit brightness levels, the highest level is quite luminous. Getting back to the beauty, even the large, simple font HP used on the keys looks sophisticated.

The HP Spectre x360’s 4.7 x 2.3-inch touchpad responded quickly to my swipes, and I appreciated how much real estate my fingers had to execute gestures, like swiping with three fingers to change windows or pinch-to-zoom, swiping with two fingers to scroll.

hp spectre x360

PERFORMANCE OF HP SPECTRE X360

Loaded with an Intel Core i7-8565U CPU and 8GB of RAM, the HP Spectre x360 accommodated my demanding web-browsing habits without breaking a sweat. I simultaneously loaded 20 Google Chrome tabs. There wasn’t even a hint of lag.

The Spectre x360 performed well in our synthetic benchmarks, but competing for other ultrabooks edged it out on most tests.

The 256GB SSD inside the HP Spectre x360 performed well on our File Transfer test, duplicating 4.97GB of mixed-media data in 13 seconds for a rate of 391.5 megabytes per second. That matches the rate of the Gram 14 2-in-1 (512GB M.2 SATA SSD, 391 MBps) and tops with the Yoga C930’s (256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, 339.3 MBps) efforts. None of those ultrabooks could keep up with the blisteringly fast Huawei MateBook 13 (512GB NVMe SSD, 636 MBps), which topped the premium laptop average (548.4 MBps).

The HP Spectre x360 also lagged behind on our Handbrake video-transcoding test. The HP laptop needed 22 minutes and 30 seconds to transcode a 4K video into 1080p resolution, whereas the Gram 14 2-in-1 (21:17), Lenovo Yoga C930 (20:45) and Huawei MateBook 13 (18:30) completed the task a bit more quickly.

GRAPHICS

Because it all relies on an integrated Intel UHD 620 GPU, the HP Spectre x360’s graphics performance is average for an ultrabook. You won’t run into issues running demanding programs, like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Spark or even playing modern games at low settings, but a discrete GPU is required for more graphics-intensive tasks.

hp spectre x360

BATTERY LIFE

HP Spectre x360 is a champion and when it comes to the battery, in fact, it could easily last into the second day of use, it all depends on your workload. With an outstanding runtime of 12 hours and 7 minutes on the battery test with continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, the Spectre x360 outlasted the Lenovo Yoga C930 (8:09), Huawei MateBook 13 (6:15) and the category average by several hours.

FINAL VERDICT

The HP Spectre x360 performs best in almost every area. This laptop attracted me with its premium design and enchanted with outstanding battery life, a world-class keyboard and powerful speakers. HP Spectre x360 offers strong performance and its 13.3-inch display, 1080p touch screen display is sharp and colourful. Along with its new design, this year’s model introduces new features, like a physical webcam kill switch and a fingerprint sensor, which add up to make it one of the best laptops.

For one, competing ultrabooks are thinner and lighter, and the Spectre x360’s chunky display bezels nearly compromise otherwise elegant design. Also, the display doesn’t get as bright as its competitors, and the Spectre x360 is filled with bloatware.

Overall, HP knocked it out of the park with the Spectre x360. It’s a compelling 2-in-1 and undoubtedly one of the best laptops on the market right now.

DESIGN OF MACBOOK AIR

A slim spike of machined aluminum, the new MacBook Air is very similar to the iconic laptop that inspired it. We tested a gold version of the Air that looks quite good and premium. The Macbook Air is also available in the space gray and silver options that the Apple MacBook Pro is sold in.

At 2.8 pounds and 0.2~0.6 inches thick, the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air is a little heavier than the Dell XPS 13 (2.7 pounds; 0.3~0.46 inches) and the HP Spectre x360 (2.8 pounds; 0.6 inches), but lighter than the 13.9-inch MateBook X Pro (2.9 pounds, 0.6 inches) The new 13-inch MacBook Pro (3 pounds; 0.6 inches) is a little heavier than the Macbook Air.

PORTS

Apple’s USB-C port-only vision is future-forward at best and frustratingly limited at worst. The Apple MacBook Air features dual Thunderbolt 3 ports on its left side, and you have to use one of those to charge the MacBook Air.

There’s also a headphone jack because what’s good for the iPhone isn’t best for the MacBook. The 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro also starts with this port selection, but it can be upgraded to four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

This port layout suggests you own — or are willing to buy — a USB Type-C hub to gain additional ports such as the SD memory reader and USB Type-A port that many still need.

macbook air

KEYBOARDS

The MacBook Air offers the same keyboard which you’ll find on Apple’s MacBook Pro, which is shallow and clicky and provides you a decent typing experience. Testing it on the 10fastfingers typing test, I click-clacked my way to 73 words per minute with 96% accuracy, a shortfall from my 80 wpm average.

The Macbook Air’s keys feature 0.7 millimeters of travel, which is quite short it should be at least 1.5 mm.

Apple’s MacBook Air gives the 4th generation of its Butterfly-switch keyboard. The previous generations had a reputation for being a failure-prone. This 4th edition of the Butterfly switch features a different material designed to provide increased reliability, but it didn’t feel much different to me, and it’s hard to say how it will hold up over time.

TOUCHPAD AND TOUCH ID

While pinching and zooming on Apple’s MacBook Air’s 4.6 x 3.1-inch touchpad, I saw that the surface provided very smooth and fluid shrinking and zooming. Apple’s Force Touch trackpad offers accurate tracking of my taps and clicks, though which I miss the old trackpads that actually moved when you clicked them down.
Apple’s MacBook Air gives you the best of Apple’s touch-sensitive interfaces. Instead of being stuck with the MacBook Pro’s OLED Touch Bar screen you get the company’s Touch ID biometric scanner plus physical F1-F12 function keys. The Touch ID button allows for a super-fast unlocking system, confirmation of your identity for Apple Pay and also functions as a power button.

macbook air

PERFORMANCE

Loaded with a Y-Series Intel Core i5-8210Y CPU with 8GB of RAM, the 2019 MacBook Air has the same “just enough” kick of performance that we saw in the previous MacBook Air (2018).

I saw no problem as I multitasked in Chrome on the Air, splitting a 1080p episode of the Hot One’s YouTube show with a baker’s dozen of browser tabs.

In benchmark testing, though, Apple’s MacBook Air got shown up by the competition, which all rock faster U-Series processors.

The 256GB SSD in the MacBook landed a write-speed rate of 1,011 MBps on the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, which is fast, but not the fastest.

On our video-editing test, the MacBook Air took a whopping 36 minutes and 6 seconds to transcode a 4K movie to 1080p. That’s much longer than the 21:55 category average, the 19:20 from the Dell XPS 13, the 14:42 from the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 22:50 from the Huawei MateBook X Pro.

BATTERY LIFE

The Apple MacBook Air offers OK battery life, so you can probably forget its USB-C cable at home if you’re out for a chunk of the day. If we do Web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits, the Air’s battery hit empty after 8 hours and 51 minutes, more than half an hour longer than the 8:19 premium laptop average.

The HP Spectre x360 (12:07) lasted much longer, as did the 1080p version of the Dell XPS 13 (12:22). The 4K XPS 13 (7:50) and Huawei MateBook X Pro (8:19) ran dry in less time. The Apple MacBook Pro lasted longer, at 10:48.

macbook air

CONCLUSION OF APPLE MACBOOK AIR

The MacBook Air’s decent battery life, sharp screen, strong sound, and elegant gold colorway make it a solid entry-level laptop for Macbook fans. If only its processor had a little more kick to it, it would be easier to recommend the Air.

For faster performance, you could spend $200 more to upgrade to Apple’s MacBook Pro. If you’re not tied to the Apple world and you’re OK with a lower-res screen, look at the 1080p Dell XPS 13, which is faster, lasts longer and costs $100 less than our Apple MacBook Air, at $1,199.

But for those who want to save a little money, and don’t need the Touch Bar and have a normal workload, the new MacBook Air is a solid option. I just wish I could trust that keyboard. For that, only time will tell.
