Design And Display

OnePlus has used a different design on its latest Nord, to differentiate it from the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Some aspects of the OnePlus Nord’s design are similar to the Oppo and Realme, and I’m not surprised, because they are all part of the same family. It has a new feature which is the alert slider, a similar layout for the buttons and ports, and yes, no headphone jack again.

The build quality is excellent with a polycarbonate body of the One Plus Nord. You will get the protection of Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back of the device. I like the Blue Marble color on the Nord. You will also get subdued Grey Onyx color.

You can’t expand the internal storage as the SIM tray only supports two nano-SIM cards. This is not a cause of worry for the 128GB and 256GB variants, but If you are using a 64GB variant you might fall short of storage after a year or so, depending on usage. There is a surprise from OnePlus as it offers 50GB of free cloud storage for a year if you sign up for its Red Cable Club.

DISPLAY

OnePlus smartphones are known for their AMOLED displays and I’m happy to see that this also comes with the same display. The sides of the display aren’t curved like OnePlus 8, but there is a cutout for two selfie cameras. The size of the screen is 6.44 inches and has a Full-HD+ resolution of 1080×2400 along with a 90Hz refresh rate. If you want to tweak the colors you will get the option and you can also mask the camera hole with a black strip, if needed. It’s your choice.

OnePlus Nord’s display doesn’t have any color accuracy certifications, but it supports HDR10+. Overall it’s a good-looking panel, with deep blacks and punchy colors.

Talking about the box accessories you will get normal things like any other One Plus phone. There’s a silicone bumper case, a Type-C cable, a fast charger, and of course, stickers to show off.

One Plus Nord Specifications

Nord is one of the very few phones to launch in India with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC. This chip was announced last year along with the flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC. This processor has an integrated Qualcomm X52 5G modem and has inbuilt on the 7nm process. The processor promises that it has better processing capabilities and up to 30 percent faster graphics rendering than to the Snapdragon 730G.

Variants

You will get three variants of One Plus Nord in India. The first variant with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for Rs. 24,999; the second one with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage which is priced at Rs. 27,999, and the top model is 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage will cost you Rs. 29,999.

The phone measures 8.2mm in thickness and weigh 184g. A single super-linear speaker at placed at the bottom, and an in-display fingerprint sensor, and face unlock authentication. It doesn’t have any official IP certification. The device comes with a 4,115mAh battery, with30T fast charging.

The OnePlus experience wouldn’t be complete without OxygenOS. Like the One Plus flagship phones Nord also has a very similar interface and features. There’s Zen mode, a built-in screen recorder, and you will get an option to customize the ambient display, fingerprint animations, etc. One Plus had promised to give software updates for two years and security updates for three years.

You will see some software changes in the OnePlus Nord, compared to other OnePlus phones. The biggest one is the use of Google’s stock dialler and messages apps instead of using its own OxygenOS. OnePlus wasn’t very clear on the exact reason for the change when asked about it but simply stated that the buyer would be more comfortable with Google’s solution.

Another small change has been made in the camera app. If you want to share your photo then simply you have to long-press to preview and choose the app to share with.

PERFORMANCE

According to OnePlus, the Nord is also going to deliver the same experience as its flagship phones, and yes, it does a very good job. With regular usage,
you can’t find any difference between the OnePlus Nord and an OnePlus 8. The interface is very snappy, apps load very faster, jumping between two apps is a breeze.

The Snapdragon 765G is a pretty solid processor.
The OnePlus Nord did a great job such as Asphalt 9: Legends and PUBG Mobile, using the highest visual settings in each title. The gameplay was smooth and you didn’t notice any unusual heating either. Face recognition is very fast.

The in-display fingerprint sensor worked very well. You just have to quickly tap to unlock the phone

Videos looked good on the OnePlus Nord’s display, especially HDR videos. The single speaker on the Nord is very loud, thanks to Dirac’s software enhancements.

Talking about battery life it was pretty solid throughout. On one charge you can easily go through one and a half-day. If you are playing lots of games and using the camera heavily then the battery will drain quicker, but I was still able to get a full day’s worth of use. In the video loop test, the Nord ran for about 14.5 hours, which is a good time.

According to me on average, I think most people would be happy with the mileage they get out of a single charge. When you are running low, the bundled charger is able to take the battery to around 93 percent in an hour, which is fairly quick.

FINAL WORDS

With the launch of OnePlus Nord, it feels like OnePlus is going back to its roots. This is not a ‘flagship killer’ smartphone.
You can call OnePlus Nord as the OnePlus Lite or OnePlus 8 Lite. I think it is just a beginning by OnePlus, and hope so in the future, we could see more in this series, possibly targeting even lower tiers of the smartphone market. If you are currently using an older OnePlus smartphone, then the Nord should be a good upgrade for you.

I don’t think many people are going to see about the 800-series Qualcomm SoC, because, it’s really impossible to tell the difference. The shift from focusing purely on specifications in its products in the early days of the company, to the focus on the experience now, can be seen not only in the OnePlus Nord but also in its other products.

The OnePlus Nord is currently the most affordable 5G smartphone in the Indian market, which is a unique advantage for OnePlus. The competition is good, though. Smartphones such as the Redmi K20 Pro and the Realme X3 series offer a more powerful processor. The OnePlus Nord might not always match up to the competition on specifications alone, but when you take into account the software and promise of timely updates, it does make a very compelling case for itself.

Poco M2 Pro Design

Poco wants us to know the fact that the Poco M2 Pro is made in India, with labels on the front and back of the box. You will be surprised to see that the bundled charger has a ‘Mi’ logo on it and we are greeted by MIUI when we boot up the phone.

The smartphone has an attractive design and is well built, but it is very similar to the Redmi Note 9 Pro. On comparing both phones side by side, they appear to have the exact same body. Everything, including the buttons, ports, hole-punch in the display, and the rear camera are perfectly same. Poco has added a new angular striped pattern on the bottom three-quarters of the phone. The camera module has also had some changes. The M2 Pro comes with a P2i water-repellent coating, which is said to make it splash-proof.

The Poco M2 Pro is a little heavy and feels large in the hands. On the right side of the device, you will get a fingerprint sensor that is embedded in the power button and it authenticates you with a simple tap. Volume buttons were placed on the opposite side of the device, as they are a little hard to reach. You will get a SIM tray on the left that supports two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. The headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and speaker are placed at the bottom of the device, while on the top, we have a secondary microphone and an evergreen infrared emitter.

DISPLAY

Poco M2 Pro comes with a 6.67-inch full-HD+ LCD display, with a special cutout for the selfie camera. Gorilla Glass 5 is used on the front, back, and the rear camera module. Most of the pre-applied screen protectors are really annoying, but the one on the M2 Pro is not intrusive. The display is quite bright, colors are punchy, and the Settings app lets you tweak the color profile.

One feature that you are missing is a high refresh rate. A 120Hz panel is one of the best features of the Poco X2, but the lower-cost M2 Pro gets a standard 60Hz display.

Overall, the smartphone feels very well built and looks good in blue.M2 Pro is also available in black and green color. Talking about the box accessories, you get a silicone case, charger, cable, and SIM eject tool.

Performance

MIUI and app performance are excellent. The thanks go to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC. Yes, it’s the same processor that was used in the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Realme 6 Pro. You will get three variants of this device. The middle variant of the Poco M2 Pro, with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 storage, is priced at Rs. 14,999. There’s a lower variant also with 4GB of RAM and the same amount of storage, which costs Rs. 13,999, and a top-end variant of this device with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage priced at Rs. 16,999.

Navigating through MIUI’s interface was awesome, multitasking is a breeze, and apps, in general, were quick to load. Talking about the Gaming performance M2 Pro worked well. I played heavy-hitters and all ran smoothly with good graphics. You won’t notice any heating issues even after playing for long hours. You will get a Game Turbo that gives you shortcuts for screen recording, etc while playing games.

Videos looked good on the Poco M2 Pro. However, the speaker will disappoint you a little as there is a single speaker which isn’t very impressive. You can enable software enhancements for audio if you use wired headphones, but there’s nothing to boost the volume of the speaker. So you have to compromise a little here.

Battery: Long-lasting

Let’s taLK about the battery life and YES it is going to impress you. The 5,000mAh capacity easily lasted for an entire day, even with lots of gaming and other usage. If you are a light user, you can use the phone well into the second day. The phone manages more than 17 hours in the HD video loop test, which was good. Poco M2 Pro comes with a 33W fast charger which does a good job of quickly charging the battery. The battery gets 0 to 90% in an hour.

poco m2 pro

Final Words

According to me, the Poco M2 Pro is a good addition to the Rs. 15,000 smartphone lineup and I have no trouble in recommending this phone. In a lot of ways, you can take a look at Redmi Note 9 Pro with quick charging at a similar price. And of course, it is easier to buy as compared to Xiaomi’s flash sale system. The M2 Pro comes with the good build quality, a sharp display, solid battery life, and good performance. The cameras are good but you can’t say perfect.

The Realme 6 should be a solid alternative, as it is the only phone in the market with a 90Hz display under Rs. 15,000.

I hope this article is helpful for you.
