DESIGN

Vivo launched it’s latest Vivo S1 Pro. The Vivo S1 costs ₹ 15,449 and it is a very good-looking phone. The diamond pattern on the back has gone and you will get three different gradient finishes. These are ‘Jazzy Blue’ ‘Dreamy White’ and ‘Mystic Black’. The Vivo S1 Pro feels a little chunky at 8.68mm thick, and after prolonged one-handed use, the 186g weight is quite noticeable. The rounded edges and tapering back make it easier to hold, and we thought it would be too slippery because of the glossy finish but it doesn’t. The back isn’t pure glass though, as Vivo uses laminated plastic.

On the front side, we have a 6.38-inch Super AMOLED display with a Full-HD+ resolution. There’s an in-display fingerprint sensor too, which works very fast. Face unlock is also present in S1 Pro which is reliable but just not as quick as compared to other phones at this price segment. Vivo gives you screen protector pre-applied which is quite annoying after sometimes.

Vivo has done good button placement on the Vivo S1 Pro. On the left side, there’s a tray for either two Nano-SIMs or a single Nano-SIM and a microSD card. At the bottom of the phone, S1 Pro has a USB Type-C port and speaker, and there’s a headphone jack on the top.

The backside of the phone is where the Vivo S1 Pro stands out of the competition in terms of design. Apart from the jazzy color, I liked the slim profile of the camera module. The LED flash is placed outside the camera module. Vivo’s logo and the tagline are below the camera.

In the box, you will get usual accessories such as a silicone case, a Type-C cable, an 18W charger, and the main headset.

SPECIFICATIONS AND SOFTWARE

The Vivo S1 Pro is loaded with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 octa-core SoC. This kind of processor is typically found in phones under the price range of Rs. 10,000 mark, such as the Realme 5i and Redmi Note 8. We are not saying that this is a bad processor, but driving a full-HD+ display in heavy games could be challenging. Thanks to Vivo for adding 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in S1 Pro, and this is the only configuration on sale.

Talking about other specifications on S1 Pro include dual 4G VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5, FM radio, GPS, USB-OTG, and support for Google’s Widevine L1 DRM certification. There are the normal sensors too, including a gyroscope and compass.

Considering for software, we have Vivo’s Funtouch OS 9.2, which is based on Android 9 Pie. Vivo S1 Pro had the December 2019 security patch, which is fair. The user interface is quite complicated. While using the S1 Pro in landscape mode, the gesture still has to be made from the same side of the screen, which is quite annoying for some peoples.

There’s a lot of bloatware pre-installed on the Vivo S1 Pro, but you can remove all the third-party apps.

PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY LIFE

The Vivo S1 Pro works well in performing day to day tasks. Its camera design stands out this phone under this price segment. The display gets very bright, making it easily legible even under direct sunlight. The colors are also very vivid because of the AMOLED panel, and text and icons are adequately sharp. The Snapdragon 665 handles multitasking well but when it comes to heavy gaming this one lacks somewhere.

PUBG Mobile struggled to run at a smooth framerate even at the Low graphics preset. The game was playable but a little jerky at times. We didn’t notice any overheating, thankfully, even after 30 minutes of gameplay. The single speaker doesn’t get too loud and the sound is a little tinny. Videos are enjoyable due to the vivid display.

The Vivo S1 Pro comes with a 4,500mAh battery, which easily lasted us for a day and a half, with normal usage. In the HD video battery loop test, the phone ran for 17 hours and 7 minutes, which is a good time. Vivo uses its Dual Engine Fast Charge feature, but the original charger in the box isn’t very fast to charge it quickly. S1 Pro takes 30 minutes to charge 31% and about 61 percent in an hour. For completely charging this phone it takes 2 hours and a half.

VIVO S1 PRO SPECS AND CAMERA

Vivo S1 Pro comes with four rear cameras setup. The primary camera consists of 48-megapixel with an f/1.8 aperture; the secondary camera is of 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture; the third one is of a 2-megapixel macro camera, and the fourth camera is of the 2-megapixel depth camera. For the selfie lovers, S1 Pro comes with a 32-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The user interface of the camera app is very easy, with most of the shooting modes are above the shutter button. Some commonly used and important controls, such as the ultra-wide camera, bokeh, and macro modes, are placed in a separate carousel menu, which needs additional taps to get into.

You can record videos only at 1080p, which is not a good thing, especially at this price range. Unfortunately, there’s no stabilization. The selfie camera can shoot up to 1080p too, but again, without any stabilization. Low-light videography was not very good and had lots of grain as well as weak details. The wide-angle camera shot even poorer footage in low-light, making it unusable.

FINAL WORDS FOR VIVO S1 PRO

The Vivo S1 Pro is a stylish and good looking-phone with a crisp display and solid battery life. The design of this phone is eye-catching, and the new gradient finishes, as well as the diamond-shaped camera module, helps this phone stand out among its competitors.

If you’re hoping to play heavy games like PUBG and want to take great photos, then Vivo S1 Pro is not made for you. You can look for other smartphones at this price level, such as the Realme X2 and the Redmi K20, have much more powerful SoCs and will hold up much better over the next few years.

The selfie camera is quite good for this phone, and it will work well as long as you’re shooting under good light. The rear cameras of this phone are a bit underwhelming. MicroSD card slot is missing in this phone.

Finally, the Vivo S1 Pro is not a bad choice if you want a stylish design, good battery life, and a punchy display. If you want an all-rounder phone, we suggest looking at offerings from Realme and Xiaomi.
